Generally screen DPI seems to be handled Really Badly across the board - most WinXX systems lie to you about DPI too, just returning 96 or 120 or whatever they fancy regardless of what actual display is connected. Recent Xorg X11 systems appear to be going the same way...
This came up recently on the OLPC/Sugar lists where they were trying to make Sugar scale nicely on non-OLPC hosts (the OLPC itself has a really high DPI due to the weird Pixel-QI displays it uses, but running Sugar on non-OLPC hardware needs to scale the display accordingly of course...) So, it transpires that the Xorg folk have decided to have the server lie about the physical DPI of the monitor, as that was causing problems elsewhere... The details of their reasoning escape me now (and I don't think I understood it at the time either!) but I'm sure Google will find something...
