Well, in theory, the EDID data returned by DDC2 on most any recent monitor gives pretty much the same info as HDMI has - indeed some of the pins in an HDMI connector are just implementing DDC, the same as a conventional VGA-style monitor. So, in theory, the graphics card can query the monitor and recover preferred resolutions, horiz and vert dimensions (in cm, not inches, but whatever) and aspect ratio, etc... (No DPI as such, IIRC, but if you know the horiz screen size (albeit in cm) and the number of pixels in the width of the display, getting to a useful DPI value from there does not seem too hard...) It's all in the EDID spec, so in principle if the monitor manufacturers actually implement that (I don't know for sure, but I thought they pretty much all do) then the display driver ought to be able to return actual values for any attached monitor. I suspect the fact that they do not is much more to do with the drivers than the h/w support, to be frank. It's a software problem!
