Thank you Matthias, I tried again and changed the first four entries in the Fl_Fontdesc built_in_table[] from Helvetica to dejavu and that did work now.
However, I think FLTK is free of charge and therefore should not use a font as a default font which is not free. If you want to download the font, you have to pay for it. You are not allowed to use it without paying a licence fee.
