Argh, bother. Sorry. Looks like I'm having a real bad day...

Yes, my bad. It's my default editing set-up.

I've had this same problem before, so I should know better, and I meant
to turn that off before committing.
(Does anyone know if there's a svn command to make it ignore whitespace
changes on commits BTW?)

Policy (here) is to strip whitespace, so it's in my default profile
settings.
But I can turn it off (on good days, when I remember) for fltk
commits...

I'd favour making stripping of trailing ws the default - since that's
the path of least effort for me!

In this case, I was using scite on a Windows machine - I also use
Textpad on Windows (also configured to strip trailing ws). 
Many editors now do seem to have it as an option, and I always tend to
turn it on (since its house policy here) and then forget when commiting
to projects that have a different policy.

I need to learn to diff before I commit just to see what will happen...
