Your little example worked (sort of) when I added stencil operations to it. 
Strangely it seems to work better if you don't explicitly call 'mode' to enable 
stencil planes. My app gets really messed up if I call 'mode' to enable the 
stencil bits. So I took out that call, and the call to FL:visual. Stencil 
operations seem to be working o.k. now. That's counter-intuitive to me.
