Thanks for this link.

Hmm this suggests that the UTF-8 version should be a completely
different thing. Possibly FLTK1.2 . For me it would be the way to go, if a
backward compatibility breaking FLTK1 with UTF-8 support would be
'officially' anounced.

The pro seems to be:
o version 1.2 is not yet released and is potentially available?
o coding would be no additional core developers issue, I guess
o acceptance for a UTF-8 environment
o overcome UI breaking of some applications
o encourage translators
o existing code can choose easily what to compile/link against

cons:
o with 1.0 and future 2.0, a 1.2 would be a third version to keep running
Once 2.0 is out this may not be ideal as distributions tent to drop
  quick.
o more things to explain to users (on email list maintainance)
o is this feature enough for a new branch? (print...)
o distributions which drop blindly the older for an newer (1.0 <-> 1.2)
o add for your like ...

Huh, much of negatives for FLTK.

kind regards
