The subwindow is not hidden. eg. try adding:
sub.box(FL_FLAT_BOX);
sub.color(FL_RED);
..and you'll see the subwindow is really there, shown automatically.
I believe only parent windows have to be show()n to be seen.
All others (subwindows/groups/widgets) are all shown automatically.
