Apparently putting the number INSIDE the engraved triangle
is a workable solution:

..takes up less screen space.
Something else I was wondering about; I was wondering how one could
toggle through primary vs. secondary sorting without a popup menu.
Apparently a common (and obvious) solution is to use CTRL-click (or
SHIFT-click)
in the column headers to toggle secondary sorting.
