There's really nothing in fltk that you could meaningfully tweak - it already responds about as fast as possible. More likely any sluggishness comes from the underlying windowing system, if you are not maxing out the CPU or memory bus. I see Nikita suggest that microwindows is slow, and I guess it is well known I'm not a big fan of it either. Certainly worth trying kdrive/tiny-X, see how that works out - and it is more like a "standard" X-server into the bargain, so has fewer "issues" usually.
