I don't think I understood the OP's question. Is this a question about
putting "icons" into menu items?

Do we even support that?
I do not think that we did, but I have never tried it - it is not a
thing that I like to do.
(aside: I note that the Gnome stuff in the recent ubuntu seems to have
deprecated the use of icons in menus, which suits me just fine.)
