I've decided to look beyond FLTK. Others are also reporting the same problem as what I've encountered when building Octave on Mac OSX (both 10.5 and 10.6). The only conclusion at the moment is that the problem is related to the linking of libraries. However, exactly what the problem is remains a mystery. Thanks for the help.
