As an aside - have you examined the pixmap_browser demo in the test
folder?
I think it demonstrates how to do the things you are trying to do, so
might be a useful worked example for you.

Which will also give you some handy reference examples to study.
What you are trying is fairly straightforward stuff, but I think you are
coming at it from slightly the wrong angle, so seeing a working example
will surely bring great illumination!
