Oh right, I see.

All I did was create a large offscreen window when I wanted to print, then 
rendered into that. 
Since it was no actual window I could make it arbitrarily large, so I scaled it 
to be the same as 300dpi on an A4 sheet. Then I "printed" from that window, and 
it looked more or less OK.
