I must have made an error with my configure option,
as it compiles on my retry. The cairo_test executable
doesn't show the graph though.

at this point, my second issue is the more important one.
The mouse currently packaged with the iMac has a single button.
scrolling left, right, up or down is done with gestures on a smooth surface. 
The keyboard is tiny with few peripheral keys.
