Hmm, that ought to Just Work; my default set-up is OSX 10.6.8 with Xcode-3.2.6, 
and I always build from the command line... Wonder why it does not work for you 
though...?

Why are you running autoconf? The tarballs already have the configure scripts 
etc. pre-generated, so running autoconf is not going to be helpful at this 
point.

(Though of course working with an svn checkout you would need to use autoconf, 
but you are using the tarball I believe?)

I see that Greg and Manolo have suggested a few things, but it does sound like 
your build env is slightly hosed in some way... I'd definitely give a fresh 
tarball a shot without running autoconf, and see what that outputs though!
