On my machine (PPC G5 iMac, yeah, it's an oldie now), the difference
is negligible, only noticeable if I'm really looking for it (which I
was after reading this post). I tried it with DragThing, which also
lets you mark docks as "visible on all spaces", and I *think* that I
see the same (minimal) slowdown.
