The simultaneous use of words and pictures in visual art is something we
can attribute to Dada and this is intermedial.<
now I write:
Reed, you're right! I think I was concentrating on the fact that the notion
of Intermedia activities(Dick Higgins coining the term etc.) came a long
time after Dada. When I see Dada collages that also contain words collaged
in with the pictures I see them as collages(a single medium) and I think
that's what they were intended as. I didn't think the Dada intention was to
blur boundaries between media or to work between media....in fact I'm not
too clear as to what their stand was on this. Anyone know?
Schwitters and Duchamp are people associated with Dada who I can see as
being consciously intermedial but this was much later. It's difficult really
because in considering Dada now one is influenced by all the subsequent
movements and art activities that have drawn inspiration from Dada. Those
subsequent activities have their own analyses attached to them which can
often affect one's perception of Dada.......one sees Dada in a new light if
you like.
