in 1940 john cage experimented with placing objects inside the piano, in
between the strings, to accompany a dance piece by syvilla fort. this gave
unexpected microtonal and percussive effects which were in some ways the
beginning of his willingness to accept indeterminacy. as you probably
know, john cage was a major figure to those involved in fluxus, a number of
whom (not maciunas mind you) were in a class with him at the new school for
social research.
cage is the most important artist of the twentieth century for many people,
myself included.
