h'lo,
toronto panel discussion was not so bad. the four participants included:
wayne baerwaldt (sp?) works at the plug-in gallery in winnipeg and currated
the al/beck show. gave a brief over-view of fluxus and happenings.
terrance davis (?) has a show on ciut and did a great job of connecting
fluxus to pop music (and this is an area of expertise of mine - if i indeed
have one). followed the nam june paik smashing of the violin (which is not
very exciting 30 years later) by smashing an electric guitar and pointed out
that pete townsend was an art student who attended the destruction of art
symposium.
michael snow was funny and smart and had many ties to fluxus in the sixties
whilst living in nyc. i think he contributed a film to a fluxus festival
actually.
sook yin lee admittedly did not speak much about fluxus but she is much more
than a vj. i was listening to her music in bobsyouruncle 15 years ago. her
role was mostly to riff on the 'fun' and 'chance' elements of fluxus. and
the rapper was introduced, obviously, to tie together the collage work of al
hansen with the cut-n-paste music of beck hansen.
toronto does not offer much to a fluxus fan so having three events in the
space of a month (playing with matches, yoko ono project and this panel) is
something to be thankful for.
yers,
dd
