hello,

at the risk of making enemies here, i feel i have to defend ken friedman's
position on wasted bandwith.
i'm not even archiving the way he is and i find it all a bit much. and that
remark about "artists vs. art critics" was particularily harsh.

as for joe jones; i have two great books about his work, both by jones
himself. one is called "music machines from the sixties until now" and the
other, "my first book of computer drawings". both were published in 1990 by
rainer verlag.

the kitchen published a cd called fluxsaints in 1994, which i suspect is
pretty obscure. a faster way to sample his work is to pick up the ryko
re-issue of yoko ono's second solo record "fly." his machines (billed as the
tone deak music co.) are all over the disk. the liner notes have yoko's
current reflections on his contributions and a photograph of the machines
(reproduced from the gatefold of the lp). it also contains one of ono's best
songs, 'mind train.' it was the only song from her early repetoire that she
performed on the 'rising' tour. she dueted with sean and often with guests
(perry farell for example). the song was also ripped off (magnificently) by
stereolab for their 'metronomic underground'.

yours,

dave
