In the past I've run a Linux box briefly here at work. Never tried FreeBSD.
On the whole one of the problems I find with these free Unix variants is
that hardware manufacturers (I'm talking about things like scanners and
digital cameras here) do not often provide drivers for any OS other than
Windows/MacOS. The other problem is that some of the best software for
certain tasks only exists for windows/MacOS. I'm all in favour of
non-microsoft solutions but until they can provide everything I feel that
the best solution is running several systems. In fact I have 3 486's & 1
P133 at home but only 3 machines are ever in use at any one time. On these I
have 3 running Win95 and 1 running DOS and Win 3.1 so I can still run older
stuff. At work I use Win 98 on a PII 350 and Unix . Between these systems I
have all the tools I need. At some point I intend to build another Linux box
but I don't feel any rush to do so. Also Linux is no real use for small hard
drives, don't know what the hard drive requirements are for FreeBSD,
anybody? In fact in terms of hard drive space and efficiency I've always
liked DOS best.
Anyway enough geek rambling.
It'd be interesting to know what systems others have set up in terms of
efficiency and useful software tools.
cheers,
Sol.
