Some poems were read, some music played, in the palest of pale grey modes.
A number of pictures were presented, beginning with Cubist productions by
Gris and Leger: the audience sat on its hands. The mood changed, however,
when recent works by Picabi were unveiled, one consisting of inscriptions
in large black letters on a light ground, including the letters
"L.H.O.O.Q." which, when read aloud (elle a chaud au cul) form, as every
French schoolboy knows, the phrase: she's got the hots. At the sight of
this the audience began to get noisy, and the tumult was increased by the
sight of another Picabia work, this time done in chalk on a blackboard.
Part of this consisted of the words "RIZ AU NEZ," which, read out loud,
can mean either "rice in the nose" or "laugh in your face" (ris au nez).
The noise level rose further: at this point Breton, as had been arranged,
wiped the blackboard clean of its transient Picabia with a damp sponge.
