Several possibilities:

1) You may have been eating in room 24. Since the door was closed, the
numbers would appear backward to you, if they appeared at all, thus
displaying "42".

2) You may have been eating in a room that had been mistakenly marked "42",
but was really just a large closet or the like. Whether marked as "42" or
not, no room in the House of Flux is truly a forty-second room.

3) The room number may have been obscured by fruit, such as an enormous
tomato.

4) You may be playing a practical joke on us.

5) You may have eaten not in the House of 'Flux', but in the House of
'Flax', which of course has a room 42. I have made that mistake myself
several times, as they are on the same street and look disturbingly similar
from the outside. A clue that could verify this: if your food seemed
excessively stringy, you were probably in the House of Flax.

Whatever the case may be, rest assured you did not eat in room 42. The
builders simply did not build a "room 42".

I seem to remember several rooms were full of fruits.

And room 42.

You say, Tom, it doesn't exist
but I had lunch there once with
well, let's just say
a member of Fluxlist
so
how do you account for that?

We discussed the meaning of life, of course
