This sounds very low-tech, but you can use simple "clickers" -
any type of loud sharp handheld clickers as a substitute. I'm
trying to remember the "official" name for them, but there
used to exist little metal (tin?) toys that were small animal
shapes (frogs?) and fit in your palm that you could go about
the room clicking. Are they still available at toy stores? or
has every toy gone "high-tech"? Alvin, himself, recommended
this to me as an alternative back in '78 (whew, time
flies...), so maybe he still feels that this is an
alternative(?) I believe that actual echolocation devices are
now available through companies that provide resources for the
visually impaired, but may be prohibitively expensive for
folks who are not impaired.
