I finally got my lazy buns up to the Guggenheim to see the Matthew Barney show. Now, I'm sorry that I waited so long and only have another week or so to try and see it again (along with Cremaster 3, the final film of the series). I realize I'm running the risk of sounding overenthusiastic, but for me it was really transformative. And I'm terribly jaded and bitter, so that's saying alot! It's as if he took the best aspects of early surrealist filmmaking and Beuys (sans the politics) and ran it through a Butoh filter. Barney readily admits to the Beuys influence, but I wonder if he's aware of his Japanese parallel? If you do a google search for "Matthew Barney" you will find, among other things, some of the angriest, most rabid "art reviews" I've ever seen. You'll also find out that he's managed to impregnate Bjork, but I don't think the reviews on that are in yet. So, if you have even the slightest taste for hermetic systems, you'll want to move into the Guggenheim until June 11. (Assuming you're in the NYC area at present.) M
