Correspondence sent to Meneghetti 10/07/03
regarding certain lies and rips ofs used to gain access to the biennale on his
part
Dear Sig Meneghetti,
Having just returned from the UK, having left
immediately after the mismanaged chaos which was the brain academy apartment
openings, Mr Bowman now finds that he has time to outline a few
points which trouble him.
He has noticed that at the Biennale there were
posters/pamphlets publicising your 2002 project "Nulla vita ex hoc pane" in
which you used the 'frozenrefrigeratedboiledfriedbakedandroasted events 2003'
graphics somewhat out of context.
Mr Bowman was under the impression that you
requested permission to publish his document/text/logos to publicise your
part in his project for the biennale di venezia 2003 and to which he
agreed. Mr Bowman feels that he appears to have been mistaken,
as what you did publish has absolutely nothing at all to do with 'Alan
Bowman's 'frozenrefrigeratedboiledfriedbakedandroasted events 2003' - the
logos and images of which appear also to have been digitally
altered.
Mr Bowman was led to understand by Sig DiMauro
also that you paid a fairly large 'donation' to help fund the show, obviously
late on as you name does not appear on any of the official publicity for the
show that we have seen - e.g. the official website. (http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/arfarf/biennale/biennale.html )
It was also fortunate for you, Mr
Bowman feels, that your sudden inclusion in the show coincided with the
alleged making of a donation to help out which put the organisers in such a good
mood that your artwork, a digitally modified version of your piece for Mr
Bowman's project - yet irrelevant to the original concept, was placed right
in the center of the show for the opening.
Mr Bowman would like to also draw your attention to
the text printed on the back page of the 'nulla vita ex hoc pane' document,
especially to the following passage:
"The objective is to highlight the aspects of
non-commercialism adopted by certain movements which, often through this
banalisation of economic matters, manage to preserve two fundamental features:
creative independence and independence from the which often in an almost
extortionist manner; an issue that concerns artists the world over.
**For
this reason Alan Bowman asked Renato Meneghetti to create a video artwork called "nulla vita ex hoc pane": a cutting criticism of money, the propogator of all human misery and a vicious limit of artistic thought and subtlety of artistic _expression_." POINTS:
1. Alan Bowman categorically did not ask Renato Meneghetti to produce a video called "nulla vita ex hoc pane". Sig Meneghetti was invited to participate in the project, indirectly, by the simply dispersion of an open invite namely the 'frozenrefrigeratedboiledfriedbakedandroasted events 2003' e-mail. Mr Bowman's control over which was exteremely limited - it was after all an open invite to anyone who recieved it -NO SINGLE PERSON was individually invited personally to participate. Also Mr Bowman is not familiar with the works and views of Renato Meneghetti, nor is he interested in said work and views. He himself cannot think of any reason why he should wish to ask Sig Meneghetti to produce anything other than an apology and a retraction of the problematic statement. 2. This year all participants in
the Biennale 'extra' events were required to pay a participation fee, which Mr
Bowman duly did (250 euro). It seems strange that Sig Meneghetti, who has
produced a piece of work which is a "cutting criticism of money, the propogator
of all human misery and a vicious limit of artistic thought." should want to
participate in an artistic event in which the artist has to pay to participate,
yet alone pay an alleged inflated 'donation' at the last minute to a show which
would allow him to show the "publicity" for this attack
on the "limit of artistic thought and subtlety of artistic
_expression_."
3. Mr Bowman is also
curious as to why Sig. Meneghetti would choose to choose a completely irrelevant
project, that is one which which simply explored the processes and effects of
cooking and cooling paper as a base from which to relaunch an old project. And
in doing so why he felt it necessary to publish such a blatant untruth!
Surely not a cynical and somewhat contrary way of being included in the Biennala
di Venezia, this cant be true of such a well known and respected
artist.
4. ** Mr Bowman politely requests the
retraction of the above statement, regarding the video.
Mr Bowman and the Freeformfreakout Organisation
deeply regret the fact that they have been forced to write such a letter,
especially as so many of the people who participated in the
'frozenrefrigeratedboiledfriedbakedandroasted events 2003' project
did so with such enthusiasm and honest approaches to the subject.
Mr Bowman and the FFFO intend to request a
withdrawal of ALL pieces bearing Mr Bowman's name and the logos of the
Freeformfreakout Organisation from the Brain Academy Apartment
show.
We look forward to a prompt reply
