Not sure whether this is the solution, but it's somehow related.
Perhaps Autocad saves references to certain complex objects (blocks
perhaps?) on layer 0, but keeps the actual geometry on the layer at
which it was drawn. I had a similar thing a few months ago with
Microstation, which saved references to cell objects on the (usually
unaccesible) level 0.
Just a thought...
