Thanks Ron,

I had looked at that, but it seems to require considerable setup in the
database, and Autodesk doesn't appear to have actually released the
extension that they announced two years ago (the one you pointed to was
not related to Oracle). As well, it appears that the MapInfo portion of
that toolkit uses point features to store text, without rotation or text
attributes, and uses auto-labelling on the client side to display the
text. This will not work properly for my CAD-positioned text.

In my testing with MapInfo, I have not been successful at storing text
objects to the Oracle database at all. It stores points, lines, and
polygons OK, and stores a row for text objects (as a point), but when I
re-open the table the text items are not displayed. I'm not sure
whether it's possible to store text items in Oracle from MapInfo at all,
or if this is caused because I'm using an older version of MapInfo (7.5)
on Oracle 10g.

Unless someone has some other suggestions, it looks like I might be
stuck exporting my text to .tab files.

Jason

Jason;

Subject: [fme] Storing data in Oracle for MapInfo access

Hello,

I'm just starting to use Oracle Locator for storing some Autodesk data
(via Munsys). I'd like to eventually make this data available to
MapInfo users too. Does anyone know the schema that MapInfo uses to
store text features from an Oracle table (if they even support this)? I
think that I'm probably going to have to use views to provide the
non-text AutoCAD layers to the MapInfo users, and re-write the AutoCAD
text data into separate tables for MapInfo on a scheduled basis with
FME.

It looks like I have some challenges ahead of me getting the various
applications to be able to read each others data. Text features
especially.
I've looked at the interoperability toolkit that MapInfo released a
couple years ago (it looks like Autodesk never released theirs) and it
appears to involve a considerable amount of work and per-dataset
customisation.

Jason

P.S. Has everyone seen Safe's new movie? It's pretty cool, basically
says all the things we know to be true about FME in a way that managers
can understand. http://www.safe.com/products/fme/movie/index.php
