While you're at it, in your spare time, can you make FME work against
multiple processors so that my new dual-core workstation can shine in
the results? :)

A timely question. One thing I am thinking of doing is creating a small
set of basic workspaces that folk can use to benchmark FME on their PC.
If we get a good number of results it'll be easy to see just how much
better the higher options are and to gauge how good your setup is.
