Vancouver, B.C. - June 28, 2006 - Safe Software Inc.- the worlds
leading provider of spatial data translation and data transformation
solutions - today announced the release of FME 2006 GB, the latest
version of the companys Feature Manipulation Engine technology. Among
the hundreds of user-requested enhancements included in this release,
FME 2006 GB offers important customization options to enhance
security, increase work efficiency, and assist with processing
ever-increasing data volumes.
New security options in FME 2006 GB allow users to password protect
workspaces, custom formats, custom transformers and mapping files.
Within the Workbench application for designing data transformations,
users can now customize the interface for faster performance by
placing frequently used tools and transformers on the toolbar for
quick access. Authoring workflows and debugging has also been made
easier with the inclusion of optional counters in the Workbench canvas
that show the number of features passing through each link between
transformers and feature types.
Users running FME 2006 GB on selected 32-bit versions of the
Microsoft Windows operating system can now process large datasets by
setting the /3GB switch via a simple edit to a system file. The /3GB
switch borrows one gigabyte of memory from kernel processes and
makes it available to the application, for a total of 3 gigabytes of
application addressable memory. When run on 64-bit versions of
Windows, FME 2006 GB automatically has 4GB of user application
addressable memory available.
MRFCleaner, a new transformer which is useful for repairing the
geometry of data, is available as an extra-cost item for FME 2006 GB.
This new data cleaning capability was developed and made available by
MRF Geosystems Corporation of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
New format support in FME 2006 GB includes a TOP10NL writer, an
Additional Military Layers (AML) reader, support for the Open
Geospatial Consortiums GML Simple Features Profile, and optimized
access to Microsoft Excel, SQL Server, and Access databases
through Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects. Read and write support for
Pervasive PSQL databases has also been added, and a Vector Product
Format writer is available as an extra cost plug-in.
The Universal Viewer application has been significantly enhanced to
now display raster data. This new functionality underscores Safe
Softwares commitment to lead the industry in providing spatial
Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) support for raster as well as
vector formats.
With this release, we continue to push the reaches of our
technology, said Don Murray, President of Safe Software. We have
added and improved support for many formats such as GML and KML. We
have also enabled FME to take advantage of advanced memory usage
features of the Windows operating system to assist our users who
process large datasets.

More About FME
FME is an integrated collection of Spatial ETL (Extract, Transform,
and Load) tools for the distribution and transformation of
location-based data. FME manages database loading, data extraction
from legacy systems, merging multiple data sources, coordinate system
conversion, and format to format translation for the exchange of map
data. FME consists of four major components: a translation engine (FME
Universal Translator), a graphical authoring environment (FME
Workbench), a data inspection tool (FME Viewer), and application
extenders that directly integrate into a variety of spatial
applications. Visit www.safe.com for more information.
