Hi Kurt,
Can you clarify from_layer for a non-Autocad user please? 

In the FME Readers and Writers Manual (part of the help system) you
should find all of the attributes and settings that are available for
DWG. If it isn't there then let me know and I'll query our developers
to see if we can make it available.

In your destination feature type properties (where you set the fanout)
there should be a tab marked parameters. In there is a setting called
"Default Layer Color". Is this what you are referring to? Probably not
- it appears to simply tag all features with the same autocad_color -
but I thought I would mention it.
