We needed this feature not so long ago and got another company to write a plug-in. Originally developed for FM5, but it worked fine without modification in FM7 (both times in Mac environments). I don't think it was that complicated to write. Features included being able to specify the socket number other than the default.

In our situation, we had to query a small custom written app that ran in the background. The plug-in opened a socket, retrieved some results into a text field in FileMaker, then closed the socket.
