Starting with Mac OS X 10.3, you can create zip archives from Finder. I thought as well that Finder would then run the zip program to create the archive, but watching process viewer, there is actually no other process launched, so it would appear that FInder itself, does create the archive.

As to the problems when a files doesn't have an extension, simply modifying the file name to add the appropriate extension will allows windows to use it.

Well, there's a Create Archive command in its File menu. Whether it's actually the Finder that performs that function when I choose that command is too philosophical for me.
