Jay,
Bruce is mostly right, however you don't really want to connect your
system directly to the internet, what you need to look at, and noadays
that is easier with most ADSL routers, is NAPT also know in most routers
as Application and Gaming settings.
Here you set your system to become the system talked to when a
connection to a webserver (port 80) is attempted from the internet.
Mostly this works best when you fix the IP on your system running the
IWP webserver.
Another one supported by most ADSL routers is dyndns.org here you just
create an account with a dns name like jayerlebacher.dyndns.org and you
have your router update this automagicly.
It sounds more complicated than it reallye is.

Hi Jay,
You have a couple of issues to overcome for this to work. First if
you have a router between your internet connection and the PC, you
may have to connect the PC directly to the cable modem in order to get
an address that is reachable from the internet. Depending on the
router you have it may be able to forward the address to the PC or
clone the mac ( hardware address) of the PC and make the connection
for you. Check the documentation on your router. When you are using
the basic setup for a home version router ( with or without WiFi) is
provides a private /non-routable IP address. Usually these addresses
start with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. These work great for your local
network and local DHCP server but can't be reached from the internet.
The second issue is getting your website set up with a DNS name.
There are a number of services that will register a domain name for
you and work with a Dynamic address. They update the ip address
associated with your domain name very frequently so you can be found.
This site provides that service. http://www.no-ip.com/
Please note, I haven't used this company so I can't recommend their
service The URL is included as an example of the service you will
need. You will have to do some research to select a provider.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
Perhaps someone can advise me on how to set up IWP using a host
computer with cable modem access to the web.
The IP address that is in my IWP set up doesn't connect to my IWP
page from my friends' computers. I have a feeling that this is the IP
of my router.
Would I be right in assuming that I have a problem because I have a
dynamic rather than a fixed IP address?
Am I therefore unable to use IWP?
Is there a workaround?
