The problem of tape degradation can be avoided somewhat by keepning a
copy on disks as well as tape, and possibly a DVD or similar.  Also, you
can write the data to multiple tapes.  Storing the tapes in optimal
conditions would also extend their lifetime.

Some considerations in log storage.

Are you going to encrypt the data? Logs have sensitive information.

If you encrypt the data - are you going to store this on tapes?

This is an important point as tapes degrade and encryption is not
forgiving to errors.
