I've read about this smart tag issue in the tech press, although I haven't
seen it. This was a feature Microsoft built into the beta version of
Windows Xp, the new operating system (replacing Windows ME and Windows
2000) that is due out at the end of this year. There were a lot of
protests about it, and supposedly Microsoft will not be including the
feature in when XP is released (but constant vigilence is probably a good
idea).
These Internet Explorer "smart tags" are very different from the "smart
tag" feature in Office XP, the office software suite that replace MS Office
2000 (not to be confused with Windows XP). Microsoft likes to use the same
name for a bunch of different stuff -- it probably suckers people into
buying various things they don't need. Anyway, I haven't worked with
Office XP yet, but a lot of people whose opinions I respect say the Office
smart tags are quite useful.
