As I mentioned in last week's Helpnet newsletter, I've been considering
moving the www.ptfolkschool.org Web site off of MINT's servers, and to a
national Web hosting company. I can now report that I've put my Web pages
where my mouth is, and moved our Web presence to HostWay (www.hostway.com).
I learned about Hostway through Fred Langa's LangaList newsletter. He has
located his Langa.com site, which gets at least thousands of time the
volume of our site, on HostWay, and gave it a good review. Hostway is
located in Chicago.
For $13.95/month (prepaid for a year), we get:
- 200Mb of Web space
- 6 Gb/month of traffice
- ~600,000 hits/month
(this is all **way** more than our site now needs)
- 10 POP3 E-mail accounts
- unlimited mail aliasing and forwarding
- detailed Web traffic stats
- a Mailman mailing list of up to 250 subscribers
I chose Hostway over Interland for our site because the monthly cost is
about 2/3 of Interlands, and because of the Mailman list. Mailman is an
open-source mailing list program, that will meet all our mailing list
needs, including Web access to list archives. I'm hoping to move our list
(for the last time?), and get away from Topica's "free" service. Topica
does not give us as much control over our information as I'd like (for
instance, the archives are only saved for a year), and I worry about what
they may do with information about list subscribers, despite their privacy
policy.
I'll send a separate message with information about our possible new list
home, once I finish working through all the configuration options.
Signing up for Hostway, and all of the Web site and E-mail configuration,
is done on the Web, and so far everything has been pretty straightforward
and has worked as advertised. (I think it would be a little difficult for
a beginner, though.) I have had no occasion to talk to a real person, so I
don't know how quick a response I will get if and when I need to do
that. I will continue to share my experience as we go along.
