Cynthia-

The E-mails are probably causing your computer to try to connect to the
Internet because they are HTML-formatted messages that contain elements
(such as graphics) that need to be downloaded from the Internet. The
surest way to stop this behavior is to change your computer's Internet
connection settings. Do do this, open Control Panel> Internet Options, and
choose the "Connections" tab. In the middle of the window, select "Never
dial a connection" -- I bet that right now "Always dial my default
connection" is selected. Now that you've changed this setting, your
computer will only dial when you tell it to. (This means you'll have to
connect before checking your mail, browsing the Web, etc.

As an alternative, you could disable the preview pane in Outlook Express,as
you suggested. This should also do what you want, by letting you delete
the messages without any dialing taking place -- so long as you don't open
the message.
