Glad Microsoft has improved its site some. I have always found searching for
ANYTHING on that site completely frustrating so haven't tried it in probably
at least a year. I will give it another try.

My defrag does eventually finish. I think the thing that worries me is that
this has never happened before, and now it happens consistently. I've been
defragging this computer probably at least once a month and at some times
once a week for the entire 3+ years I've had it. It's also inconvenient to
have it take five hours (which is what it took last week) since I have to
leave the computer on but can't use it (I don't like to leave it on when I'm
not home).

I'll try the Microsoft site, and maybe I'll break down and invest in Norton
and see how that goes.
Thanks for the info.

You could try running the Norton Utilities Speed Disk program -- one big
advantage is that it runs much, much faster than Windows 98
Defrag. However, it will also restart if it detects a disk write. I've
sometimes seen the same situation you describe , where Windows seems to
write to the disk on its own. I always figured it was doing something with
the swap file, but I was just guessing. Iwt was never so bad for me that
Defrag couldn't eventually finish, though.

Have you tried searching through Microsoft's Knowledge Base? They've
improved their search engine recently, so it's a lot easier to find
relevant articles. The main page is at <http://support.microsoft.com>.

Good luck,

Jon
