Jane- I'm sending this to the whole list, since the question may be of general interest. To restart in Safe Mode in Windows 95/98/ME, you need to watch your screen intently when the computer is starting up, and press the F8 key when the words "Starting Windows 98" (or whatever Windows you have) appear on the screen - this is just before the Windows splash screen appears. This will get you into the start-up options menu, where you can choose Safe Mode from the list.
On fast computers this message flies by really quickly - don't blink. Also on some computers the manufacturer has their own start-up screen which covers up the "Starting Windows 98" message In these cases I just start hitting F8 every second or so until it either works or the computer starts yelling at me. It may take you several tries to get it. If you can't get to safe mode this way let me know, and I'll tell you a way to get the start-up options screen to appear whenever you start the computer.
