Again, I'm sending this reply to the whole Folkschool-list, since there are 
probably others out there with the same question.  What you are describing 
is normal. In Safe Mode, Windows uses only basic, least-common-denominator 
settings and drivers (video, mouse, hard drive, etc.).  For instance, 
you'll notice that your display looks really ugly.  The drivers needed to 
work with your modem, to do networking, connect with the Internet, etc. are 
not loaded, so these things will not work.

Safe Mode is meant for troubleshooting, not normal use.  The idea is to 
avoid any problems you may be having with Windows in regular mode by 
loading a minimal version of Windows, so you can repair the problems.
