I have seen what you describe when my computer was trying to
draw on more memory than it had available. There is a dreamy
effect where fragments of unrelated tasks flicker in parts of
the screen. Reducing the number of active programs was an
immediate solution, and adding more memory solved the problem
permanently.

You might verify that the additional memory you recently
installed is in fact being recognized by the computer. In
Windows 98, right-clicking 'My Computer' and selecting
'properties' brings up a screen showing (in the last entry) how
much RAM is installed. I'm sure other operating systems have
similar ways of checking installed RAM. 

Whether it shows the right amount or not, if you still have the
problem, I'd remove each new chip, clean the gold plated edge
connector with a pencil eraser, brush off any residue, and
reinstall the chip.  It could be that one or more of the tiny
plates is not making contact with the socket leads.
