Having Lieberman-style prototypes certainly helped a lot (they're actually a requirement); this was something Ian introduced to libid in February 2007, when Robert Hirschfeld and I were visiting VPRI.

Obviously, this had to go into libid and could not be added at the higher Jolt level, which would have been convenient. Having total control over the object structures and message sending semantics will be most welcome.
