I never suggested there's no alternative. I suppose questions can have many
valid answers depending on the level you ask them at (

be hearing the question at the level of whole implementation design, whereas
I am hearing it at the level of micro-optimizations constrained by an
existing design.

Anyhow, I appreciate the reference to Self's implementation. It's an
interesting read.
