The picture I had in mind was a interconnection of systems that grow in an interdependent way by absorbing selectively from each other. This implies mechanisms for diffing two systems and filtering appropriate elements for absorption into one of the systems. While a system can be used independently (i.e. it has its intrinsic worth), it is capable of absorbing, adapting and amplifying its capabilities when plunked into a network systems.
In this scenario, diffing a system against itself along a timeline is just a special case. Warth's Worlds is a fascinating paper but I didn't see it address multiple world scenario (yet!). It is possible that my reading hasn't gone deep enough to realize its ramifications. xmldiff was an injudicious analogy for a research mailing list :-(. Apologies.
