So usage of that field is not by any means formalized, but it is quite clear they contain vendor info. You don't need specialist tool - just doing $ strings /usr/share/fonts/myanmar3-unicode/mm3.ttf | grep -i microsoft | wc -l 32 i.e. the font contains 32 instances of the string "microsoft".
