It sounds like you might be running a mixed XFree86-4.1.x
and XFree86-3.3.x setup. If you have the fonts from XFree86-4.1
but are running a 3.3.6 X server or font server, you will
see something like this.

You might want to try:

 - Restarting your font server ('service xfs restart')
 - Rerunning Xconfigurator to make sure you actually get the XFree86-4.1
   server. ('Xconfigurator --preferxf4')

Where did you get the 4.1.0 XFree86 packages?

                                        Owen
