While we're trying to figure out the merits of client side vs server
side font rendering implementation, I'd like to understand the
development plans for client side support for complex scripts in X.

Is there a plan to build a client side font rendering library that's
capable of supporting complex scripts and that will be a part of the
base X distribution ? I really think that font rendering framework
is basic functionality that should be a part of X, without which it'd
be incomplete.

One such library is Pango - but it's not a part of X.

Also, it'd be helpful to have a single API, for GUI toolkits such as gtk
and Qt to use to handle the fonts, that abstracts out the implementation
details (client side vs server side) from the toolkit. Is ST a good
candidate for such an API (it may be a bit premature to ask?) ? That way,
when we have it all figured out, we don't have to rewrite the font
handling parts of Qt, gtk or Motif.
