This is a very good observation:
What should the text APIs look like?

I've taken a quick look at it and they appear to be trying to
think top down. I know that Sun has engineers looking at CTL
so I imagine they are at least aware of it.
It appears to me that we all have some studying to do.

Or perhaps we can collect the best parts into a public library.
