Slow deployment of new features is the issue not slow development.

The XFree86 folks are doing a great job. The problem is that the
cool new features take a long time to get on *all* (or at least
a high percentage) desktops as users do not regularly upgrade
their X servers unless they upgrade their OS.

Supporting legacy X servers is fairly easy for client side
font handling.

For server side font handling the deployment of new X server
extensions the issue is slow deployment of new X servers.

Differences noted above.

I'm glad to see people thinking about how to support Indian
languages. When would most desktops see this new IndiX extension?

I believe my goal is similar yours: move the X environment forward.

I spent a fair amount of time discussing the deployment issue with
Keith. The Xrender extension is very fast but for X servers without
this extension it does not matter.

Its good to see that Xft has addressed the deployment issue and
can now can work on all X servers.
